of the dials lends this wristwatch its unmistakable appearance. Current models are available almost exclusively in precious metals like gold or platinum. Classic details like Roman numerals and delicate hands underscore this dress watch's elegant nature, making the it the ideal timepiece for any festive or formal occasion.
The Handwerkskunst series contains A. Lange & Söhne's watchmaking masterpieces. The German word "Handwerkskunst" means "craftsmanship" in English. Each watch is strictly limited in number and features even more intricate hand-finishing than the standard editions. For example, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst has a particularly finely engraved white gold dial. Only 15 copies of this timepiece exist. This masterpiece has an official list price of 357,000 USD, making the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst about 120,000 USD more expensive than the standard edition.
In 2019, A. Lange & Söhne celebrated 25 years since its re-founding. The manufacturer marked the occasion with three limited-edition Lange 1 models: a classic Lange 1, an automatic Daymatic, and a version with a moon phase display. All three timepieces are white gold and have very low production numbers.
New in-house calibers made their way into the collection in 2020 and 2021. For example, the Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar now uses the caliber L021.3, while the Lange 1 Time Zone features the L141.1.

How much does an A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 cost?
Since its introduction, A. Lange & Söhne has released numerous versions of the famous Lange 1 luxury watch. Many collectors find watches from the very first series with the reference numbers 101.001, 101.002, and 101.005 especially interesting. Each of these early Lange 1s has a solid metal case back that hides the wonderfully finished movement within. Both yellow gold models, the 101.001 and 101.002, cost 27,000 Deutsche Marks (DM) (about 15,500 USD today) at their introduction. Now, those same timepieces sell for around 86,500 USD. You can purchase the platinum 101.005 for about 74,500 USD. In 1994, it had an official list price of 39,000 DM or roughly 22,500 USD.
The current rose gold Lange 1 bears the reference number 191.032 and costs approximately 34,500 USD in mint condition. You'll also find the white gold model with a silver dial in this price range. Released in 2018, a never-worn white gold timepiece with a blue dial demands over 36,500 USD.
In the late 1990s, A. Lange & Söhne produced a small number of stainless steel Lange 1 watches. At the time, they only cost 28,500 DM (approx. 16,500 USD). Today, these watches are so rare and desirable that they often sell for well over 175,000 USD at auction.
The Lange 1 has been available with a moon phase display since 2002. This function occupies the upper half of the small seconds dial and also serves as a day/night display. The moon sits on a light blue background during the day and a dark blue background at night. If you're interested in the rose gold Lange 1 Moon Phase, be sure to set aside around 41,000 USD for a mint-condition timepiece. White gold models cost a few hundred dollars more, and the platinum version changes hands for some 48,500 USD.
The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 has retained its value well over the years and even has the potential to appreciate.
Lange 1 2019 Anniversary Editions
In 2019, A. Lange & Söhne celebrated the Lange 1's 25th anniversary with three limited editions. Each features a white gold case, silver dial, and tempered blue hands. A blue alligator leather strap with white stitching completes the look and holds the timepiece securely on the wrist.
with the hour and minute display on the left and a small seconds at 5 o'clock. There's also a date at 1 o'clock, directly above the movement's power reserve indicator.
What makes the Lange 1 "25th Anniversary" truly special is its engraved hinged caseback, which depicts the company's headquarters. It also features the words "25 Jahre Lange 1" ("25 years Lange 1"). When it was released in 2019, this timepiece had an official list price of 47,900 USD. Today, this model rarely appears for sale on Chrono24.
Lange 1 Daymatic "25th Anniversary"
This means that the hours and minutes are located on the right, the small seconds at 7, and the date at 11 o'clock. Again, the power reserve indicator rests below the date between 8 and 10 o'clock.
The back of the Lange 1 Daymatic "25th Anniversary" is also worth a look. Thanks to sapphire crystal, you have a clear view of the intricately decorated movement, including its hand-engraved balance cocks. Due to its low production numbers, this model is exceptionally rare. The manufacturer's original recommended retail price was 44,200 EUR (approx. 49,000 USD).
Lange 1 Moon Phase "25th Anniversary"
A. Lange & Söhne also limited the Lange 1 Moon Phase "25th Anniversary" edition to a production run of 25 pieces. Its most remarkable feature, the dual moon phase display and day/night indicator, comes from the in-house caliber L121.3. During the day, the white gold moon appears on a light blue background, while at night, it shines against a dark blue sky dotted with 383 stars. You can view this exquisite movement with a 72-hour power reserve through the sapphire crystal case back. At its introduction, this model had an official list price of 43,300 EUR (approx. 48,500 USD).
Grand Lange 1: Prices and Information
At 38.5 mm, the classic Lange 1 is a bit small for modern men's watch standards. To meet demands for a larger watch, A. Lange & Söhne released the Grand Lange 1 in the early 2000s. The earliest models are 41.9 mm in diameter and powered by the Lange 1 caliber L901.0. In this caliber, the small seconds dial and outsize date overlap slightly with the main time display. You can get a mint-condition yellow gold model with the reference number 115.021 for around 27,000 USD.
In 2012, the Grand Lange 1 received its own caliber with adjusted dial proportions, the L095.1. The case also shrank to 40.9 mm in diameter. The version in rose gold costs roughly 44,000 USD. Prices for the white gold edition with a black dial come in around 41,500 USD. The platinum model is the most expensive and demands around 50,000 USD in mint condition.
The A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1 is also available with a moon phase complication. This watch's moon phase indicator sits within the large time display. Plan to spend around 50,000 USD on a never-worn rose gold watch. In platinum, this timepiece costs approximately 52,000 USD
As the first Lange watch to feature a luminous outsize date, the Grand Lange 1 "Lumen" stands out from the rest of A. Lange & Söhne's catalog. What's more, it comes with a semitransparent dial and glow-in-the-dark hands and indices. All of that comes together to give the "Lumen" a much sportier feel than any of the manufacturer's other watches. This platinum timepiece has a limited run of 200 pieces and sells for around 73,500 USD. Its successor is also limited to 200 pieces and comes with a moon phase display. You can purchase a mint-condition Lange 1 Moon Phase "Lumen" for about 93,500 USD.
Automatic Winding: The Lange 1 Daymatic
If you prefer automatic watches, the Lange 1 Daymatic is the right model for you. The in-house caliber L021.1 ticks away inside its 39.5-mm case and lends this timepiece a 50-hour power reserve. You can recognize the Daymatic by its dial: The displays mirror those of the standard Lange 1, and it features a retrograde day display instead of a power reserve indicator. This watch costs around 37,500 USD in rose gold, 39,500 USD in white gold, and 44,000 USD in platinum.
Prices for the Lange 1 Time Zone
The Lange 1 Time Zone is one of this collection's most complicated models. The watch can simultaneously display two time zones from a set of 24. Changing the time zone simply requires the push of a button. You can tell which time zone is currently displayed by referring to the city ring around the edge of the dial. The Lange 1 Time Zone shows the current local time in a small dial where you'd usually find the small seconds. The larger dial displays the time back home. Both dials also feature a day/night indicator.
Set aside around 46,000 USD for a new rose gold Lange 1 Time Zone. The white gold edition changes hands for roughly 44,500 USD, while the platinum version costs around 51,500 USD in mint condition. Fans of yellow gold watches can expect prices of approximately 45,000 USD. This collection's highlight is the limited-edition model in honey gold. This metal is more robust than most gold alloys and is exclusive to A. Lange & Söhne. Limited to a run of 100 pieces, this luxury watch has a list price of 64,300 USD.
Lange 1 Time Zone With a New Caliber
In late 2020, A. Lange & Söhne launched a Lange 1 Time Zone with the new in-house caliber L141.1. This movement has a 72-hour power reserve, which the manufacturer now achieves with one barrel instead of two. The dial features a reworked, easier-to-read day/night indicator shaped like a ring. Here, you'll also find a daylight savings indicator in the form of a small applied arrow.
This model is available with a 41.9-mm case in your choice of rose, white, or yellow gold. The yellow gold variant is limited to a run of 100 pieces and has a list price of 56,100 USD. This limited edition is hard to come by on Chrono24. You're more likely to get your hands on a rose or white gold watch, both of which sell for as little as 47,500 USD – well below their recommended retail price of 52,900 USD.
About the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar
Unlike most calendar watches, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar displays the month on a ring around the dial's edge rather than on a subdial. An off-center time display sits between 2 and 4 o'clock, and the small seconds and moon phase share a subdial at 7. An outsize date at 11 o'clock completes the dial.
You can see the tourbillon at work through the sapphire crystal case back. The rose gold model will set you back around 254,000 USD. The same watch in white gold demands about 329,000 USD.
Prices for the Lange 1 Tourbillon
If you can do without a perpetual calendar and prefer to view the tourbillon from the front, you may enjoy the Lange 1 Tourbillon. This timepiece's tourbillon is positioned where you'd usually find the small seconds display, which has been relocated to the large dial between 7 and 8 o'clock. The balance cock is also visible from the front. Newer Lange 1 Tourbillon models feature an opening in the dial that offers a view of their patented v-shaped stop-seconds mechanism.
A mint-condition A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Tourbillon in rose gold requires an investment of roughly 85,500 USD. The platinum edition costs around 129,000 USD.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Lange 1 in 2014, A. Lange & Söhne released the Lange 1 Tourbillon Handwerkskunst. This timepiece features a black enamel dial, is limited to a run of 20 pieces, and has a list price of 221,700 USD.
Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar With the Caliber L021.3
At Watches & Wonders 2021, A. Lange & Söhne announced two new Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar models. One pairs a rose gold case with a solid silver dial, while the other combines a white gold case with a salmon-colored gold dial. The manufacturer has limited the latter edition to 150 pieces, which may drive up demand.
Both watches get their power from the in-house caliber L021.3. Thanks to its perpetual calendar mechanism, it won't require any manual correction until 2100. An 18-karat gold rotor and platinum mass wind the movement, which has a power reserve of 50 hours. Like all A. Lange & Söhne movements, a lot of effort has gone into decorating the movement, including the engraved balance cock and Glashütte finishing on the nickel silver plates and bridges.
On the dial, you'll find calendar displays for the month, outsize date, day, and leap year. These are joined by a moon phase, which also doubles as a day/night indicator. Of course, you'll also want to keep track of the time, which appears on an off-center display on the right side of the dial.
All this exclusivity has its price. The rose gold model officially sells for 104,500 USD. On the other hand, the white gold limited edition model has a list price of 116,000 USD. As of publication, there were no listings for the new Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar on Chrono24.
