Daily Drivers: Great Watches for Under 5,000 Euros

Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight

If you’re a fan of Tudor and their Black Bay collection, the options can seem overwhelming. Do you want a burgundy or black bezel? A steel case or a bronze one? Early models use ETA movements, while newer versions feature one of Tudor’s in-house calibers. Introduced in 2018, the Fifty-Eight is among Tudor’s most recent new releases. There are plenty of things to love about this timepiece. First is its size. At 39 mm, the Fifty-Eight is less imposing than the collection’s standard 41-mm models. This size is perfect for those with more delicate wrists yet still big enough to appeal to fans of larger watches. What’s more, the combination of a steel case, black dial, and gold accents further enhances this watch’s retro aesthetic. While it looks beautiful in a display case, the Fifty-Eight looks even better on the wrist. Unsurprisingly, two of my colleagues already own this stunning timepiece. Its timeless design means this timepiece will be a great choice to complete any outfit for years to come.

Enthusiast’s Corner: Rare or Exceptional Timepieces

Patek Philippe Ellipse 3748

First things first: I know the Patek Philippe Ellipse reference 3748 isn’t for everyone. This slim and elegant dress watch looks like it belongs in the 1930s. It has a beautiful oval case made of solid gold, a mesmerizing deep blue dial, and your choice of a gold Milanese bracelet or thick leather strap. While it may be small by modern standards, others will find it the perfect size. The world is full of people buying massive timepieces that look terrible on their wrists just to keep up with the latest trends. Of course, I’m not here to judge anyone’s personal style. However, to me, it’s important to be aware of your wrist size and what kinds of watches actually fit and look good on it. If you have a more delicate wrist or enjoy watches with diameters in the low 30s, the Ellipse is a great option. Even though it often sits in the shadow of Patek Philippe’s other models, don’t let that stop you from purchasing one – this watch is as classy as it gets.

Iconic Timepieces: Great Value for Your Money

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Ultra Thin

As Audrey Hepburn once said, “Elegance is the only beauty that never fades.” Truer words have never been spoken when it comes to watches. Whether it’s new or vintage, an elegant timepiece will never go out of style. Some even go on to become industry icons. Despite being nothing new, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Ultra Thin looks as good today as it did at its debut. We often overuse words like “simple,” “clean,” and “elegant” to describe dress watches; however, this Jaeger-LeCoultre ticks all those boxes. The Master Grande Ultra Thin’s 38-mm steel case is the perfect size, and its short lugs and beautiful silver dial with dauphine hands only add to that perfection. You couldn’t ask for more from a dress watch. This is the kind of timepiece that transcends generations and the ever-changing landscape of watch trends. Trust me when I say that owning this timepiece means having a companion for life. What could be more iconic than that?
