The present lot is a very rare and seldomly found vintage 1950s Patek Philippe reference 1509 Wristwatch with yellow dial and gorgeous iconic tear drop lugs.

This fine and attractive 18kt yellow gold wristwatch is signed Patek Philippe & Co., Geneve on pristine original yellow dial.

What makes this particular watch more collectible is the noticeably relevant "," located after the word Patek on the dial.

As discussed in a recent Hodinkee article regarding the dial of a PP 530, The dial on this 1509 is also incredibly honest and original.

This is demonstrated by a few factors:

First, like the 530 mentioned in the Hodinkee article which discusses what a long signature is and in reference to the photo of it added above, the current 1509 has similar attributes.

Notice the "Patek, Philippe & Co" long signature still retains commas, and the accent over the "E" in "Geneve" is still present. This is a quick and dirty way to examine if an early dial has been washed or restored, and here, it looks great.

For sophisticated collectors who understand these slight nuances, the variations in the signatures produce higher levels of collectibility and are only found in the very early examples certain references.

The applied gold Arabic and dot numerals are in gorgeous condition and like the dial show no signs of wear given its vintage.

The Cal. 12"120 nickel-finished lever movement with 18 jewels, bimetallic compensation balance, micrometer regulator are in original and perfect working condition with no signs of wear and has been recently serviced and cleaned.

The outer polished railway minute divisions with Arabic 15,30,45 and 60 indication and engine turned subsidiary seconds are all sharply defined.

The circular case and teardrop lugs, and snap on back are all in mint condition and also demonstrate to the observer clear and sharp hallmarks which further show how little this time piece was worn and how well it has been preserved.

The case, dial and movement are all signed.
The case is 35mm.

Size guide for wristbands

1 | Lug width

The lug width is the width of the strap at the end that is attached to the watch. This is the interior distance between the two lugs (horn-like protrusions) on the watch casing. The strap will fit your watch only if the lug width of the watch is the same width as the strap.

2 | Buckle width

The buckle width is the width of the strap at the buckle end. If you want to keep your watch’s original buckle and replace only the strap, the width of the original buckle must be identical to the strap width. For watches with folding clasps, please choose a strap specially made for your particular clasp.

3 | Strap length

The strap length is the combined length of the short strap side 3A (without buckle) and the long strap side 3B. For metal straps, the length of the strap including the clasp is measured in the closed position.

4 | Strap thickness

Strap thickness is the height of the strap. Many leather straps thin out towards the buckle end, or “taper”. If you want to keep your watch’s original buckle and replace only the strap, the strap thickness must match the height of the original buckle. For watches with folding clasps, please choose a strap specially made for your particular clasp.
